Spartan Fund Hosts ‘Week of Gratitude’
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State Athletics and the Spartan Fund, with the volunteer efforts of student-athletes from 19 different sports, held various events throughout last week in appreciation of donors.
The ‘Week of Gratitude’ kicked off on Tuesday, April 10 when the sixth annual Student-Athlete Thank-a-Thon was held at the North End Zone Engagement Center. Spartan student-athletes in 16 sports volunteered their time during the two-day event to write personal thank you letters to nearly 4,000 Spartan Fund donors whose gifts help enhance their experience.
On Thursday and Friday, the Spartan Fund held the Renew & Tour event, providing donors the opportunity to renew their season tickets and gift commitments while also touring athletic facilities made possible through philanthropic support. Through the efforts of MSU football, donors were able to get behind-the-scene looks at the Skandalaris Football Center and the North End Zone Engagement Center.
"These events of this past week are about bringing our mission to ‘gather and engage our community’ to life,” said Executive Associate Athletics Director Chuck Sleeper. “We can’t say thank you enough to our generous Spartan Fund donors who provide resources to enhance the student-athlete experience. Through first-class facilities, supporting scholarships, or funding the operational needs of each varsity sport, our donors impact the everyday lives of our student-athletes. We also can’t say enough about our student-athletes who willingly volunteer their time to say thanks. It speaks to the character of each student-athlete and how each want to give a heartfelt thank you.”
Sleeper has overseen substantial growth in the Spartan Fund, particularly during Empower Extraordinary – the campaign for Michigan State. Publically announced in October 2014, MSU Athletics has been actively pursuing a goal to raise $262 million in support of building championship-level facilities, increasing its endowment and elevating annual gifts. The opportunities created by these gifts don't go unnoticed.
"Being a student-athlete at Michigan State has far passed any and all of my expectations,” said Zack McGuire, a senior on the MSU baseball team. “I anticipated the opportunities that Michigan State academics would be able to provide for me, but I never thought of the opportunities that I would be able to experience through the baseball program. Spartan Fund is a huge reason that I have been able to receive this type of experience. I am beyond grateful for the time I have had at Michigan State and all of the opportunities that I’ve been dealt. I am privileged to be able to represent Michigan State on the field, in the classroom and throughout the community.”
