This Week: Several baseball players worked out with the Holt Junior High Rams Baseball team on Monday night at the IM West indoor turf facility. The players then gave the team a tour of the facilities. The SASS staff will give a tour of the Smith Center and do a "Posters for Patients" event for "Take Your Child to Work Day" on Thursday from 1:30-2 p.m. the. Friday, several student-athletes are going to Ingham County 30th Judicial Circuit Court at 11:30 for their "Bring A Kid to Work Day."
Last Week: The Spartans concluded a busy week with their first win against Michigan since 2004 and first series win against the Wolverines since 2002. MSU took two out of three against Michigan in the weekend series after defeating Western Michigan, 6-0, on Wednesday and the Lansing Lugnuts, 12-2, in the third-annual Crosstown Showdown on Thursday.
This Week: MSU hits the road this week to take on Central Michigan on Wednesday (April 22) and Iowa in a Big Ten weekend series (April 24-26). The games on Saturday (3:30 first pitch) and Sunday (2:30) will be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
Notes: Freshman Tony Bucciferro struck out a team season-high nine hitters in seven innings of work against Western Michigan on April 15 ... The Spartans scored their most runs since 2007 in a 20-3 win over Central Michigan on April 1 at Olds Park and then swept Northwestern in their Big Ten home-opening series at McLane Baseball Stadium ... In the inaugural game at McLane Baseball Stadium on April 4, senior Nolan Moody threw the school's first no-hitter in more than 16 years in the Spartans' 2-0 win over Northwestern ... Moody's no-hitter was the first since Dan Garman recorded a no-no vs. Purdue on March 28, 1993, and it was the first no-hitter by a pitcher in the Big Ten since 2006 ... The no-hitter earned Moody Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper's Louisville Sluggers Top Performers List and the College Baseball Foundation's National All-Star Lineup ... The Spartans are 10-1 at home this season, their best season start since 2004 when they began the season 12-0 at home ... Bucciferro (seventh, 2.75) and sophomore A.J. Achter (10th, 3.29) are among the top 10 in the Big Ten in ERA ... Junior pitcher Kyle Corcoran leads the conference with four runners picked off ... Bucciferro, who is 3-1 on the year, has 32 strikeouts and has issued just six walks in 39.1 innings of work ... Achter (fifth, .223) and Moody (ninth, .242) are also among the league's top 10 in opposing batting average ... MSU's 12 pickoffs this year leads the Big Ten and its 21 runners caught stealing is good for a tie at second in the conference ... Junior Eli Boike is tied for seventh in the conference with seven home runs ... Boike has also drawn the fifth-most walks in the Big Ten, earning 25 free passes ... Sophomore Jeff Holm has stolen 12 bases this season, good for a tie for fourth place in the conference ... Sophomore reliever Kurt Wunderlich ranks second in the Big Ten with a 1.23 ERA in conference games.
Last Week: Michigan State rallied from a 5-0 deficit to top Central Michigan, 7-6, on Wednesday at Old College Field. The Spartans then traveled Iowa City, Iowa, for two games against the 23rd-ranked Hawkeyes. Iowa recorded an 8-0 win in the first game and posted a 4-3 victory in 10 innings in the second game.
This Week: The Spartans host Bowling Green on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Oakland on Wednesday for a doubleheader at Old College Field, beginning at 3:30 p.m. MSU then travels to Minneapolis, Minn., for a two-game series with the Golden Gophers. The two teams faceoff on Saturday and Sunday, with games beginning at 2 p.m. ET both days.
Notes: Junior Kelly Confer hit a two-run single in the eighth inning in the win over Central Michigan, marking the largest deficit that the Spartans have overcome this season in a winning effort ... Freshman Lauren Kramer recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in the 4-3 loss to Iowa ... Four Spartans are hitting better than .300, including Gina Mondo (.396), Lauren Kramer (.356), Kara Weigle (.341) and Lindsey Hansen (.303) ... Weigle has team-highs in at-bats (126), hits (43) and doubles (11) through the Spartans' 38 games ... Hansen leads the team in several categories including, runs (26), triples (3), home runs (10), RBIs (24) and total bases (78) after starting each of MSU's 38 games ... Kramer and Hair have split most of the time in the circle for MSU as both have appeared in 27 games ... Hair has pitched 100 innings for the Spartans, striking out 48, while Kramer has 60 strikeouts in 91.1 innings pitched ... MSU is 39-44 in stolen base attempts this season, and Mondo leads the team with nine ... Weigle and Hansen have added seven apiece and sophomore Karen Fox is perfect in five attempts thus far ... Three Spartans have started all 38 games, including Weigle, Hansen and freshman Ali Grant ... The Spartans have recorded 33 home runs through 38 games, the fourth-highest number of home runs in a season; MSU is one homer short of tying last year's mark ... The most home runs hit in a season was set in 2007 when MSU hit 50 homers in 59 games. Ten of MSU's 15 players have recorded at least one home run, and three Spartans (Gina Mondo, Kara Weigle and Lindsey Hansen) rank on MSU all-time home runs list ... Hansen leads the team with 10 this season, while Mondo has five and Kramer has four ... The Spartans rank sixth in the Big Ten in batting average and several players are ranked in various categories ... Weigle is third in doubles (11) and is fifth in sacrifice bunts (10) ... Hansen is tied for second in triples (3) and is fifth in home runs (10) ... Mondo ranks fifth in the Big Ten in batting average (.396) and Kramer is eighth (.356).

Last Week: The Spartan men claimed the Indiana Invite title with 196 points while the women finished in second place with 177 points. Freshman thrower Lonnie Pugh shattered the school record in the discus, turning in a toss of 56.33m (184-10). Senior Nicole Bush paced the women as she broke Jamie Krzyminski's record in the 5,000m run with a time of 15:54.26. Both Pugh and Bush took home titles in those events and both marks currently rank them first in the Big Ten Conference.
This Week: MSU will travel to one of the most well-renowned meets in the nation, the Drake Relays, held Friday and Saturday in Des Moines, Iowa. This weekend will mark the 100th running of the Drake Relays and some of the top teams in the nation will be on hand at the event.
Notes: In all, MSU has qualified 17 student-athletes for NCAA regional competition in 20 different events during the outdoor season, with many coming in their past two meets, the Joe Hilton Invite at North Carolina and the Indiana Invite last weekend ... Bush leads the way for the Spartans, qualifying for regionals in three different events - the 1,500m run, the 3,000m steeplechase and the 5,000m run ... Senior Jeremy Orr made his outdoor debut by posting a regional qualifying time of 46.78 in the 400m dash; that time currently ranks second in the Big Ten ... Brad Wentzel has posted regional qualifying marks in two events, the shot put and discus; his mark of 53.06m (174-1) in the discus ranks fifth in the Big Ten ... Sophomore Yury Ratomski qualified for the NCAA Regional Championships in the 200m dash after running 21.31 in the event at the Joe Hilton Invite; his time ranks second in the conference ... Three pole vaulters, Katie Shaw, Ashley Smith and Logan Lynch all qualified for regionals at the Hilton; both Shaw and Smith cleared 3.85m (12-7 ½) while Lynch set a new personal-best vault of 5.05m (16-6 ¾); Shaw and Smith rank in a tie for fifth in the Big Ten while Lynch currently stands in sixth... Lisa Senakiewich has posted regional qualifying times in the 1,500m run at back-to-back meets, highlighted by a season-best time of 4:23.23 at the Indiana Invite; Senakiewich's time ranks her fifth in the conference, just behind Bush who ranks fourth ... Junior Leah Elenbaas posted a time of 2:08.38 in the 800m run at the Joe Hilton Invite, qualifying her for regionals ... Both Shane Knoll and Ian Boyle posted regional qualifying times at the Hilton as well; Knoll tallied a 1:49.78 while Boyle posted a time of 1:50.22 ... Knoll improved his time at Indiana after finishing in 1:49.62, which currently ranks second in the Big Ten ... Shane Wells has emerged as one the Spartans' top performers during the outdoor season as he has set regional qualifying marks in the 110m hurdles in two of three meets during the outdoor season ... Wells ran 14.28 at the USF Quad Meet and followed that with a 14.23 at the Spartan Invite ... Senior Sarah Price qualified in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 10:30.12, ranking fifth in the Big Ten ... Two additional throwers, Ashley Lawrence and Anthony Agrusa have also qualified ... Lawrence posted a season-best toss of 14.52m (47-7 ¾) in the women's shot put at Indiana, qualifying her for regionals ... Agrusa set his mark in the hammer, turning in a throw of 56.89m (186-8) ... Joining Agrusa in the hammer at regionals will be senior Kyle Strotbaum, who qualified with his toss 58.42m (191-8) at the Joe Hilton Invite.
Last Week: The Michigan State women's tennis team concluded the regular season this weekend, falling, 7-0, to Illinois on Saturday and dropping a 5-2 match to Indiana on Sunday.
This Week: The Spartans will begin the Big Ten Tournament as the No. 11-seed on Thursday against the sixth-seeded Purdue. MSU looks to enact revenge from their 4-3 loss to the Bolermakers earlier this season in East Lansing. MSU lost the final match of the day in one of the most highly contested matches of the season.
Notes: MSU finishes the regular season with a 1-9 record in Big Ten play ... Sophomore Whitney Wilson leads the Spartans with a 20-15 singles record on the season ... The doubles tandem of Stephanie Kebler and Elena Ivanova is 7-3 in its last 10 matches ... The tandem of Kebler and junior Christine Milliken is a perfect 2-0 when partnered together ... The doubles pairing of freshman Ivanova and senior Ana Milosavljevic is 3-0 on the season when seeing action at No. 2 doubles ... The team has won the doubles point in 12 matches this season ... Freshman Dana Guentert is 7-3 in her last 10 matches; she is now 18-8 on the season ... Guentert is second on the team in wins and leads the Spartans with a .692 win percentage, including a .714 mark during the spring ... MSU has a .591 win percentage in the No. 5 singles spot this season, the best of any position ... They also have a .545 in the No. 1 doubles position ... Three Spartans - Kebler, Ivanova and Guentert - have all posted at least 10 wins this spring... Kebler leads all Spartans with 20-wins in doubles action this season, seeing all of her time in the top doubles spot.
Last Week: Michigan State closed out the 2009 dual season by falling to No. 53 Indiana on Saturday, 5-2, and then to No. 11 Illinois the following day, 6-1. Against Indiana, freshmen Austin Brooks (Houston, Texas) and Ronnie Hulewicz (Tequesta, Fla.) picked up wins in singles while the doubles pairing of senior Alex Forger (Okemos, Mich.) and sophomore John Stratton (Monroeville, N.J.) picked up a win for the Green and White in doubles action. Forger picked up the lone win for the Spartans against the Fighting Illini in singles play at the No. 2 position.
This Week: The 11-seeded Spartans will take on sixth-seeded Indiana for the second week in a row in the first day of the Big Ten Tournament, Thursday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Notes: Hulewicz defeated Maxime Armengoud of Indiana, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 ... He claims the team-best overall and dual records this season, 26-12 overall and 19-5 in dual play; Hulewicz is 6-4 in the Big Ten ... Hulewicz is also 14-4 at No. 5 singles and has posted a 6-4 record in his last 10 matches ... Before falling against Iowa, Hulewicz was riding an 11-match win streak ... Brooks is 19-18 overall, 9-13 in dual play and 1-8 in conference action ... Forger began the 2009 dual season ranked regionally at No. 27. He currently holds a 10-12 dual season record ... He went 5-5 at the No. 2 position and 5-7 at No. 1 ... Michigan State has picked up the doubles point 12 times this season, most recently against Iowa ... They are 12-13 in dual play with 11 of those wins coming at home and one on the road ... Twelve of the 13 teams that MSU has fallen to are all nationally ranked; No. 25 Notre Dame, No. 29 Tulsa, No. 60 California, No. 37 Minnesota, No. 26 Wisconsin, No. 58 Northwestern, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 51 Penn State, No. 47 Michigan, No. 53 Indiana and No. 11 Illinois ... MSU has had six losses at home, coming from No. 25 Notre Dame, No. 5 Ohio State, No. 51 Penn State, No. 47 Michigan, No. 53 Indiana and No. 11 Illinois ... The Spartans finished 0-10 in Big Ten play.
Last Week: The No. 5 Spartan rowing team earned three wins this weekend at Ohio State on Griggs Reservoir, highlighted by wins over a pair of Pac-10 opponents, Washington State and Oregon State, who were both tied for 12th in last week's CRCA national poll. MSU then topped Bucknell on Sunday in three of four races to complete the weekend sweep.
This Week: MSU has the week off in preparation for the Big Ten Championships on May 2. That event will also be hosted by Ohio State on Griggs Reservoir.
Notes: MSU's varsity eight boat has posted an undefeated regular season record, marking the first time in program history that the crew will head into to the Big Ten Championships with a perfect record ... The varsity eight won all eight of its races by open water during the regular season ... The varsity eight clocked a season-best time of 6:37.10 against Oregon State this past weekend ... In all, the three NCAA boats - the varsity eight, the second varsity eight and the varsity four - have combined to win 17 or their 21 races during the regular season ... The Spartans beat their first top-10 varsity eight boat in Wisconsin at the Big Ten Double Dual, posting a time of 6:43.66 ... The varsity four boat posted a season-best time of 7:33.39 against Iowa at the Big Ten Double Dual, topping the Hawkeyes by nearly 21 seconds ... The second varsity eight clocked in its best time of the season at the Big Ten Double Dual, clocking in at 6:45.41 against Iowa ... The Spartans are ranked No. 5 in the nation and are the second-highest ranked team in the Big Ten; four other Big Ten teams, Michigan (4), Wisconsin (9), Ohio State (12) and Minnesota (18), rank in the top 20 this season ... The MSU rowing program has qualified for the NCAA National Regatta in 10 of the last 11 seasons ... MSU tied its best finish ever last season, finishing sixth overall at the National Regatta ... MSU is also the defending Big Ten Champion.
Last Week: The Spartans placed 11th at the Boilermaker Invitational with a 26-over par 890 (297-291-302). Sophomore Payne Gniewek paced MSU, finishing 11th at even-par 216 (71-74-71).
This Week: MSU hosts the Fossum/Spartan Invitational on Saturday and Sunday at Forest Akers West Golf Course. Play will begin both days at 8:30 a.m.
