EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State Athletics Department and FOX Sports today announced a new long-term multimedia rights partnership effective for the 2016-17 academic year in which MSU will grant FOX Sports marketing and corporate partnership rights associated with its 25 varsity sports programs.
The rights will be managed by FOX Sports College Properties, a division of FOX-owned Home Team Sports, and will include in-venue signage, print, radio, television programming, corporate hospitality, digital and social media integration, promotional and experiential activities, and intellectual property rights and official designations.
The 15-year agreement will provide guaranteed revenues in excess of $150 million.
With sustained success in the high-profile sports of football and basketball, and accomplishments throughout its broad-based athletics program, Michigan State was the last school within the five major conferences to manage its rights in-house.
Widely regarded as one of the nation’s most innovative and progressive athletic directors, Mark Hollis is once again charting a unique course, with lofty expectations, through this partnership with FOX Sports.
“Now is the right time and FOX Sports is the right partner for Michigan State. FOX Sports can focus on building the Michigan State brand and leverage synergies with the FOX Sports family of networks, including FOX Sports Detroit and BTN,” said Hollis.
“The increased revenue will help Michigan State address the growing expenditures related to enhancing the student-athlete experience, including scholarships, cost of attendance, academic support, team travel, athletic training and medical services.”
The additional resources and professional staff assembled by FOX Sports will allow Michigan State to maintain and grow existing long-term mutually beneficial relationships with current sponsors while pursuing new opportunities with local, regional and national brands.
Kris Kassel, FOX Sports College Properties Vice President and General Manager, will manage the relationship with Michigan State.
“We are proud to partner with Michigan State Athletics and its roster of long-term, committed corporate sponsors,” said Kyle Sherman, President, Home Team Sports and FOX College Properties. “This is a special opportunity, and one we are committed to growing in the finest traditions of Michigan State Athletics.”
“Our commitment to relationships and doing things the Spartan way is a major factor in our success. The entire FOX Sports staff shares this commitment, and we look forward to working together for many years to come,” said Paul Schager, Executive Associate Athletics Director for External Operations.
The agreement deepens FOX Sports’ relationships with Michigan State and the Big Ten Conference. FOX Sports is a majority owner and operator of BTN. Many Michigan State athletic events such as football, men's basketball, women's basketball, hockey, and Olympic sports, are distributed on FOX Sports media platforms, including BTN and FOX Sports Detroit.
Spartan Sports Network, with offices in East Lansing, Michigan, will work with FOX Sports to continue to handle production of live radio broadcasts, coaches’ shows and ancillary programming. The Spartan Sports Network has provided radio programming and managed the radio network comprised of over 35 affiliate radio stations since the 2000-01 season.
Michigan State joins FOX Sports’ select roster of collegiate partnerships, including Auburn, Georgetown, Southern California, Villanova and the BIG EAST Conference.
