June 11, 2008 The Mason Era By Neil Koepke • Lansing State Journal Ron Mason had two careers at Michigan State. The first, as the Spartans hockey coach, lasted 23 years. The second, as athletic director, had a run of 5 1/2 years. In both jobs, Mason made a lot of major decisions. Some worked out just fine. Some didn't. But at all times, whether he was trying to recruit players and win hockey games or hire coaches, balance the budget and improve facilities, Mason strived to do what was best for the university he loved and was dedicated to for 29 years: Michigan State. He's still college hockey's winningest coach with 924 wins, 635 of them and the 1986 national title at MSU, along with seven regular-season and a record 10 postseason CCHA crowns, seven Frozen Fours, while turning out more than 50 pros and several successful coaches - all done free of scandal and with a program that was in the dumps when he got it.
