EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Athletics Department, in continuing with the random acts of kindness initiative, organized the first Random Acts of Spartans event on Thursday as coaches and staff members volunteered at various locations in the Greater Lansing area to support the community during the Holiday season.
"It's just a way to give support to the community to let them know we are here for them," said assistant compliance coordinator Sherraine Pencil, who helped plan the initiative, along with director of compliance Holly Baumgartner, assistant to the athletic director Linda Baughman, associate athletics director/administration Alan Haller, director of student-athlete development Angela Montie, and graduate assistant for tutorial services Kelly Mooradian. "It's acting out on (Mark Hollis') mission of engaging in the community and being involved. Coaches and the staff just let us know which activity they wanted to sign up with and we got a great response within 24 hours, so we knew right away that it would be a great initiative. We actually had to add volunteer opportunities for our staff."
MSU Athletics partnered with several community outreach programs and helped at the Greater Lansing Food Bank, the Salvation Army, and St. Vincent Catholic Charities.
