Dr. Tom Mackowiak has been a member of the Michigan State University athletic training staff since August 1987. Currently, he is the undergraduate athletic training program's Clinical Education Coordinator working with Dr. Tracey Covassin in clinical athletic training student education, placement, and evaluation.
Mackowiak is the full-time staff athletic trainer with the Spartan women's golf program while overseeing coverage with the MSU cross country and track programs, after spending 24 seasons assigned as the Michigan State University men's basketball athletic trainer.
He received his undergraduate degree from Ball State University with a major in special education and a minor in athletic training. He completed his master's degree at Michigan State in 1981.
Mackowiak served as the first head athletic trainer at East Lansing High School in 1980-1981. He is a former Michigan Athletic Trainers Society membership chairperson.
Mackowiak also is an adjunct instructor in the Department of Kinesiology at MSU. He assists in the recruitment of graduate and undergraduate students while assisting with the education and proficiency development of the undergraduate athletic training students. Currently, he is a co-advisor for the MSU athletic training student organization E-STIM and directs the yearly Michigan State University High School Athletic Training Workshop.
Mackowiak completed his doctorate degree from Michigan State in December 2005. His research was titled "An Evaluation of Planned Change: Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Educational Programs." He is certified from the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) as a Corrective Exercise Specialist (PES) and a NG360 Nike Golf Performance Specialist powered by the Gray Institute.
