Michigan State Crew Names Assistant Coach
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University crew coach Bebe Bryans named Matt Weise as her assistant coach today. Weise, the former MSU men's and women's crew club coach, will primarily be responsible for coaching the novice rowers.
"Matt fulfills all of the qualities I was looking for in an assistant coach," Bryans said. "His experience at Michigan State and his efforts in getting the program to where it is will be a great asset. I think we will make a great team."
"This is an exciting change for me," Weise said. "The quality of coaching has increased tremendously with the hiring of Bebe and I'm looking forward to working with her to build a successful program. Being a part of the athletic department will have an incredible impact on the quality of training and competition and I can't wait to see the results that occur from it."
A native of Grosse Ile, Mich., Weise worked with the crew club program from 1989 until 1997. After serving as an assistant club coach for three years, he was named the head coach in August of 1993. Last season, the lightweight women's eight finished second at the Eastern Sprints, while the novice lightweight eight took top honors at the Big Ten Regatta.
In addition to his experience with the MSU club program, Weise was a coach for the Lansing Competitive Rowing and the Lansing Adult Recreation Rowing. He also founded and coached the Lansing Youth Rowing at Michigan State University in 1995.
Weise graduated from Michigan State in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in physics. He earned his master's degree in physical education and exercise science from MSU in January of 1997.
