Paul Schager was appointed Executive Associate Athletic Director for External Relations in August 2015. In addition to his previous administrative roles, Schager coordinates the events group, which was identified as one of the four primary areas of focus by MSU Athletics Director Mark Hollis in his new leadership structure for Spartan Athletics.
Schager is in his 18th year at Michigan State and has spent the past seven years as the Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. In addition to managing the ticketing operations and sales and marketing office, he leads the department's branding and marketing initiatives. His primary area of focus as an Executive Associate Athletic Director is to manage and supervise events and Spartan game days.
Schager plays a vital role in maintaining relationships directly with MSU Athletics' corporate partners, as Michigan State remains one of the only schools among the NCAA autonomy conferences that deals directly with its clients rather than turning those responsibilities over to third-party enterprises.
Schager joined Michigan State in May 1998 as director of marketing after working at the University of Michigan for eight years (1990-98) as the director of licensing and the assistant director of marketing. He was named an assistant athletics director at MSU in 2001 and was responsible for coordinating corporate marketing and sponsorship sales for the athletic department. He also administered the athletics department courtesy car program and provided support for radio network and game program agreements.
A former Division I athlete, Schager earned three varsity letters in baseball at the University of Maryland, where he earned a bachelor's degree in marketing in 1987. He earned his master's in sports science in 1991 from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
He and his wife, Jane, have three children: Samantha, Jessica and Charlie.
