M. Golf. Newman Shoots Even Par 71 in First Round of John Deere Classic

Michigan State rising senior Jack Newman fired an opening round even par 71 this afternoon at the PGA Tour's John Deere Classic, held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. Newman, playing as an amateur through a sponsor exemption, posted four birdies on the day, including two in his final three holes, to sit in a tie for 80th among the field of 156 professional golfers.

M. Basketball. Pauga Named Director Of Basketball Operations

Kevin Pauga, who previously spent eight seasons with the Michigan State men's basketball team, returns to the Spartan program as director of basketball operations. He will assume his new position on July 13. Pauga replaces Richard Bader, who has accepted a position as director of sport operations, where he will have direct involvement with all 25 Spartan sports. Bader had been a member of the Spartan basketball staff for the past nine seasons.

As part of the "Spartan Football All-Access" television show debuting in August on FOX Sports Detroit, Michigan State Athletics is asking fans to vote on their favorite Spartan football plays of all time. The new "Fans' Top 10" feature will allow fans to see nominees for the list throughout the summer on msuspartans.com, with voting scheduled for the week of Aug. 17. The plays will be released in five groups, spanning from the 1950s to the 2008 football season.

M. Golf. Newman Prepares for PGA's John Deere Classic

Michigan State rising senior Jack Newman will make his second PGA Tour appearance this week at the John Deere Classic, held at TPC Deere Run in Silvis, Ill. Newman, who received a sponsor exemption, will begin his first round off the 10th hole on Thursday, July 9 at 9:44 a.m. ET, paired with Wil Collins and Tommy Gainey. His second round is scheduled to start at 2:44 p.m. ET.

MSU swimming and diving head coach Matt Gianiodis announced today that Tim Loeffler has joined the Spartan staff as an assistant coach. Loeffler comes to MSU from the University of Minnesota where he was a two-time letterwinner and as well as a student assistant coach.

Michigan State Athletics, in partnership with FOX Sports Detroit, will produce new television coaches shows for the 2009-10 season."Spartan Football All-Access" will provide fans with an inside look at the Michigan State football program, headlined by extended analysis from head coach Mark Dantonio and former MSU quarterback Jim Miller. Following the football season, the content will shift from "Spartan Football All-Access" to "Spartan Basketball All-Access" with head coach Tom Izzo.

Spartan Blast 2009 Information

The Michigan State women's tennis program has announced the signing of two recruits to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Spartans in the fall of 2009 will be Nicole Herzog (Manilia, Brazil/Colegio Libere Vivere de Ensino Basico) and Amy Barton (Brisbane, Australia/St. Margaret's Anglican Girls' School). This marks the first recruiting class for head coach Simone Jardim.

Football. Norman, Reynolds Win Gold Medals

Michigan State incoming freshmen Chris Norman and Micajah Reynolds earned gold medals Sunday (July 5), as Team USA defeated top-seeded Canada, 41-3, in the inaugural International Federation of American Football (IFAF) Junior World Championship game before a crowd of 15,473 at Fawcett Stadium in Canton, Ohio. Canada earned the tournament's No. 1 seed by winning three straight NFL Global Junior Championships (2005-07).

Michigan State women's golfers Aimee Neff and Lindsey Solberg have been named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-America Scholar Team. The criteria for selection to the NGCA All-America Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics. The minimum cumulative GPA is 3.50 and student-athletes must have competed in at least 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.

Junior Aimee Neff won the Indiana Open on Tuesday at the Legends of Indiana Course after shooting an even-par 72 in the tournament's second and final round. Neff finished with a 1-under 143 (71-72) to win the open by four strokes.

M. Ice Hockey. Miller, Booth Named to USA Olympic Camp

USA Hockey today announced that former Spartans Ryan Miller and David Booth have been invited to the U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Orientation Camp to be held later this summer. A total of 34 players, representing 22 National Hockey League teams, will skate at this camp, which will be held Aug. 17-19 at Seven Bridges Ice Arena in Woodridge, Ill.The camp is designed to assist in the preparation of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team that will compete at the XXI Olympic Winter Games to be held from Feb. 12-28, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Michigan State women's basketball head coach Suzy Merchant is serving as an assistant coach for the 2009 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team in Belgrade, Serbia. Team USA (6-0) beat Australia 81-66 on Thursday and will face Russia (6-0) in the Gold medal game on Saturday at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. ET).
