MSU opens final homestand of season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State baseball was defeated by Iowa under the Friday night lights at McLane Stadium at Kobs Field, in the opening game of MSU's final home series of the 2022 season.
Iowa scored a run in the first and two in the second, another in the fourth and one in the ninth for the final 5-0 score.
The Spartan bats were stymied by Iowa starting pitcher Adam Mazur, who limited MSU to just four hits in 7.0 IP, striking out seven Spartans while walking just two, earning the win to improve to 7-2 on the season.
"I thought they played really well and I thought we played really poorly," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "Tip your hat to their starter I thought he was really, really good and one of the better arms that we've seen all year long. When you see a good arm like that you have to get to play clean baseball, and we didn't do that, so a disappointing night, but we're back at it tomorrow."
Sophomore outfielder Jack Frank had the Spartans' lone extra-base hit of the night with a double in the fourth. Graduate senior outfielder Peter Ahn, junior outfielder Zaid Walker and redshirt-freshman catcher Bryan Broecker all went 1-for-3 with singles.
Pitching-wise for the Green & White, junior starter Conner Tomasic went 4.0 IP, allowing four runs on eight hits, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Ryan Szczepaniak went the final 5.0 IP with one run on four hits, with three Ks and two BB.
Iowa scored in its first at bat, with a walk, then a double before a sacrifice fly two batters later gave the Hawkeyes the early 1-0 advantage. After scoring one run in the first, Iowa created a pattern with two runs in the second on a two-run double for a 3-0 lead.
The Spartans tried to get a rally going in the third, after Ahn smacked a one-out single back up the box and through, out to center field. Walker then followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side of the Iowa infield, but a double play thwarted the Spartan threat.
The Hawkeyes added a leadoff home run in the fourth to extend their lead to 4-0, and Iowa tacked on a run in the top of the ninth for the final 5-0 score.
The Spartans and Hawkeyes are scheduled to continue the weekend series with game two on Saturday's MSU Alumni Day with a 4:05 p.m. first pitch and the series finale on Spartan Senior Day with a 1:05 p.m. start time, as the Spartans will be honoring their three senior players, Peter Ahn, Kyle Bischoff and Zach Iverson, along with two student managers, Aaron Boise and Tommy Merlo.
The weekend schedule is subject to change based on weather.
