The Ralph Young Scholarship Fund was established in 1956 in memory of the late Athletic Director, Ralph Young. In 1963, the efforts were expanded and the Ralph Young Fund was established in an effort to more fully meet the needs of the athletic grant-in-aid program for each of Michigan State's varsity sports, welcoming the support of alumni and friends of Michigan State who are interested in intercollegiate athletics.
On August 2, 2008, the Ralph Young Fund name was changed to the Spartan Fund. The move was aimed at increasing visibility of the University's athletic fund-raising effort to broaden participation in athletics to a wider range of Spartan faithful around the world, culminating in stronger involvement and financial support for our athletics program and student-athletes.
The goal of the Spartan Fund is to enhance Spartan Athletics by raising awareness and financial support from Michigan State alumni, fans and friends around the world. Each year your contributions provide scholarship support, help pay for athletic facility upgrades, and support operational budgets for 25 varsity sports.
Contributions to the Spartan Fund are essential for the continued growth and success of Spartan Athletics. The athletic department does not receive financial support from the University so every dollar we raise is necessary to build and sustain a competitive athletic program in the Big Ten and NCAA. Even though unrestricted gifts to the Spartan Fund are most vital, you can also choose to designate your gifts to a specific sport or program area. Either way, your support is greatly appreciated and will be recognized in one of the Spartan Fund membership and benefit levels
