Michigan State Names Stacy Slobodnik Women's Golf Coach

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State University Athletics Director Merritt Norvell has announced that Stacy Slobodniki will assume the head coaching duties of the MSU women's golf team. Slobodnik takes over for former head coach Mary Fossum who retired following the 1996-97 season after serving in that capacity for 25 years.

Slobodnik is no stranger to the MSU women's golf program, having spent the previous two years as the Spartans' assistant coach. In addition, she played at MSU (1990-94) and served as team captain during the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.

"We are excited and pleased to have Stacy as the new head coach of the MSU's women's golf program," said Norvell. "Her playing and teaching experience will be a tremendous asset as will her knowledge of the program."

After earning her bachelor's degree in Communications from MSU in 1994, Slobodnik moved to Orlando, Fla., and played professionally on the Central Florida Challenge and Futures Tour. Last summer, she captured the Michigan Amateur Championship, qualified for the United States Amateur field, and finished fourth among the amateurs at the the Michigan Women's Open. Most recently, she competed in the LPGA Oldsmobile Classic.

"To become a head coach at my alma mater is a dream come true for me," said Slobodnik. "It means a lot to me, Coach Fossum, and, hopefully, the community. The hard work and effort over the past two years paid off."

A native of Kentwood, Slobodnik is in the process of earning her master's degree in athletic administration.
