We're getting set for our 51st-annual alumni and varsity swim meet. For those of you who do not know, this meet is the longest-running alumni event during the Michigan State homecoming.

Lately, the high point of the meet has been awarding the William Heusner Service Award. In its fifth year, the award is given to worthy alumni boosters who have been superlative in their support of our program. It is named in honor of Dr. "Bill" Heusner, who taught in the MSU kinesiology department. Dr. Heusner was the meet referee at the Big Ten Championship and refereed every Michigan State home meet from 1963-2002. We expect Ellie Heusner, Bill's widow, to once again do the honors and present the award to the following 2006 recipients:

Marc Stiner

Marc has been a very generous financial supporter of the program. He dove at MSU in the 1970s for legendary coach John Narcy. Marc has also hosted our divers when they were in Florida for training. Marc will not be available to accept the award on Saturday.

Tosh Imai

Tosh is well known for his support and his commitment to MSU swimming. He has been a long supporter of the program and was particularly close to Coach Fetters. Tosh will not be available to accept the award on Saturday.

Jack Beattie

Jack graduated from MSU in 1956, and was an All-American in the program. He has been a longtime backer from his home in Orlando, Fla. He has had an incredible life that has included an orthodontics practice, World Masters Swimming Championships, and recording a cd of hit songs. Jack will be at the meet on Saturday and I will host him at the football game.

The meet warm-ups begin at 9 a.m. and we will begin events at 9:30 a.m. Diving will run concurrently, as usual. The doors will open to IM West 8:30 a.m. Our team will practice on Saturday morning from 7-9 a.m., so the back gate will be open at that time. We will provide towels and there will be a sign-in sheet at the check-in table located at the east pool entrance.

The Heusner Service Award, as well as my annual two-minute speech (that lasts five minutes) will take place at 10 a.m., followed by the rest of the meet which will conclude at 10:30 a.m.

Rob and Gail Harley (parents of Nick Harley '06) are sponsoring a tailgate on the outdoor pool deck immediately following the meet. This year to gain access to the outdoor pool you will need a ticket, which will be proved at the check-in table. Please, if you plan to attend the tailgate, pick up a ticket. The tailgate will be alcohol free.

We hope to see you all on Saturday-the alumni meet is one of the real highlights of the season for me. For those of you traveling a long way, please be safe.

Until next time,

Matt G.
