Penn State Highlights: Despite dropping its first Big Ten meet of the season, the Michigan State swimming and diving team did provide some outstanding performances, winning five events. Leading the way was junior captain John Bruesch, who won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:06.41. Bruesch was also a member of the winning 400 medley relay team with freshman Mike Tingley, junior Mike Mulshine and sophomore Chad Ganden. Junior Dan Bacheler was MSU's other first-place finisher with a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 3:24.83.

Next Action: The Spartans will travel to Evanston, Ill., on Saturday, January 24, to take Northwestern and Purdue in a Big Ten tri-meet.

Last Week's Results: Purdue 165, MSU 135

Coming Home: The Michigan State women's swimming and diving team returns home this week to take on Toledo on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Charles McCaffree Pool. The meet will begin at 6 p.m. Following Tuesday's meet the Spartans will travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. The Spartans end the dual meet season at home against Indiana on Jan. 31.

MSU Falls Short at Purdue: After a tough 165-135 loss at Purdue on Saturday, Jan. 17, the Spartans fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-2 in the Big Ten. Senior captain Anne Illgen led the Spartans with a win in the 200 butterfly (2:05.22). Senior Jami Archambault was victorious in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:08.16. Senior Sarah Salenski came up with a win in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.22) and sophomore Catrin Lenfers was victorious in the 200 breaststroke (2:23.28). Junior diver Kim Zieman swept the diving competition after victories on the 1-(188.02) and the 3-meter (214.35) boards.
