Adam Schmitt Wins Three Events To Lead MSU At Ohio State
Jan. 19, 2008 COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Adam Schmitt won both sprint freestyles and the 200 IM and freshman kevin Puskaric registered an NCAA `B' qualifying time in the 200 breast to lead the Michigan State swimming & diving teams in a triangular meet at Ohio State. Freshman Stephanie Fisher was the top performer for the women's team, having a hand in four top-3 finishes on the day. The MSU men placed second in the triangular, scoring a 173-127 win over Eastern Michigan, but falling to Ohio State, 177-115. The Spartan women dropped both dual scores. Schmitt started one of his top performances of the season with a first-place effort in the 200 free with a time of 1:38.49. He would later win the 100 free (44.79) and the 200 IM (1:51.80). "Adam had a big-time performance today," head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "I hope he realizes his goals this year because he has really worked hard." Puskaric won both breaststroke swims, clocking a 55.93 to win the 100 breast before his NCAA qualifying swim in the 200 breast. The Mokena, Ill., native won the 200 breast with a season-best time of 2:00.04. The NCAA `B' qualifying time in the 200 breast is 2:00.60. "Kevin had an incredible swim," Gianiodis said. "He really competed well. That's a top 20 swim in the whole country." Sophomores Krzysztof Olszewski and Sho Koba placed third in the 1,000 free and 200 free, respectively, while fellow sophomore Marcus Poteete swam to a third-place finish in the 200 IM.
Fisher and DeJonge led a strong start for the women, as Fisher swam the lead leg and DeJonge the anchor in MSU's second-place 200 medley relay unit (1:47.99). Fisher then placed first in the 100 back with a time of 57.79. She was supported by sophomore Sasha Lewerenz, who swam to a third-place finish in the event (59.02). Fisher wasn't done there, as she clocked a 2:05.00 en route to finishing second in the 200 back and then she swam the lead of the MSU 400 free relay team that finished second. Sophomore Sarah Biasello gave a strong effort in the 200 breast, placing third (2:23.22). Junior Heather Kiluk, who has been the team's leader in recent meets, won the 200 IM (2:06.97) and she added a third-place effort in the 500 free (5:02.21) and freshman Rebecca Ebner placed second in the 100 fly (58.38). The Spartan swim teams will host Oakland on Friday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The meet will be held at Charles McCaffree Pool at MSU's IM West building.
