MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The Michigan State men's swimming and diving team started the Big Ten Championships off on a high note by setting three varsity records led by sophomore Payton Woods. With the addition of these three new records, Michigan State's men and women have broken 10 over the course of the season.

"Payton was the star today. To re-break his own record, I'm really happy for him," MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis said.

Woods re-broke the 50 free varsity record he set last season, clocking in at 19.71. In the 400 medley relay, Woods anchored his squad to a varsity record, along with Nick Leshok, Lachie McLeish and Michael Schwers, at 3:11.82. Accompanying those two records, last night Woods anchored Alex Trompke, Leshok and Schwers to a varsity record in the 200 medley at 1:26.85.

In addition to the three varsity records, multiple athletes swam personal and season-best times.

In the 500 free, Guy Moskovich, Weston Youngblood, Joshua Lantow and Mitch Strahlman all swam personal-best times.

Lucas Smiarowski and Josh Pascua swam personal-best times in the 200 IM and Scott Piper, Phillip Meffert, Alex Duffy and Michael Kost swam season-best times in the event.

Nehemiah Mork, Leshok and McLeish swam season-bests in the 50 free.

Day three picks back up with prelims in the morning, starting at 11 a.m., beginning with the 100-yard butterfly. Diving will continue at 1 p.m. and then the finals of day three will commence at 6:30 p.m. at Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
