COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Michigan State men's swimming & diving team wrapped up the first day of the Men's Swimming & Diving Big Ten Championships, Feb. 22. The opening day consisted of two relay events, the 200-yard medley relay and the 800-yard freestyle relay.
"We finished 10th in both relays which was a little disappointing," said head coach Matt Gianiodis. "I thought we would be a little bit faster but, you know, we got three days of swimming left at this meet so we should be good in the upcoming days and we are looking forward to it."
In the first event, the 200-yard medley relay the Spartan team of junior Lachie McLeish, senior Alec Kandt, junior Alexander Trompke, and anchor junior Nicholas Leshok raced to a finishing time of 1:27.72.
Indiana won both of the opening night's relays to take the commanding lead with 128 points. Michigan had the next two top-finishes taking second in the 200-medley relay and third in the 800-yard freestyle relay to garner a total of 110 points after the first day.
Michigan State and the rest of the Big Ten schools will resume competition tomorrow, Feb. 23 at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State. The prelims will begin at 11 a.m. ET, and the finals of the second day will begin at 6:30 p.m. ET.
