Spartans Close out Big Ten Championships, Finishing in Tenth

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Michigan State swimming and diving team closed out day four of the Big Ten Championships, finishing in tenth place with a total of 113 points.

In the first finals race of the evening, Brad Gillilan improved his time by over 30 seconds to clock in at 28th place with a time of 15:40.97 in the 1650 freestyle race. Tyler Groskopf also saw sizeable improvement in his individual season-best time, shaving nearly 30 seconds off to post a 16:05.14 effort.

Jacob Jarzen continued to be the top individual swimmer for MSU. In the 200-yard backstroke, Jarzen took ninth place with a time of 1:44.10, posting a new season-best for the team and an NCAA B-cut standard time.

Nick Roberts led MSU in the 200-yard breaststroke. The sophomore placed 23rd in the C-Final race with a time of 2:03.28.

Bryan Williams carried his success from day three into the final day of action, with an 18th-place effort in the 200-yard butterfly. Williams clocked in at 1:47.26 for an NCAA B-cut standard.

The Spartans rounded out the championships with a ninth-place effort in the 400 freestyle relay. The pack of Pat Falconer, Jarzen, Josh Geschwendt and Nick McGowan also posted an NCAA B-cut standard with a time of 2:57.33, nearly four seconds better than their season best.

MSU posted three NCAA B-cut qualifying times in the final night of competition and will find out in two weeks whether or not those efforts qualify for the NCAA Championships. The men's NCAA Championships will be held March 22-24 in Federal Way, Wash.
