Swimming & Diving Tops Grand Valley State

JENISON, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming & diving team posted a men's and women's sweep over Grand Valley State on Friday, Sept. 12 at Jenison High School. The men topped the Lakers 149-87 while the women downed GVSY 155-82. This marked the third straight year the event was held at Jenson High School.
"First, I want to thank Grand Rapids," said MSU head coach Matt Gianiodis. "Tonight, there was a great crowd. This was a great experience for both the team and the program."
Alex Pierce, Kerry Sodonis, Becca Ebner and Jenny Rusch won the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:46.90. The men followed suit with a first-place finish in the 200 yard medley relay with Jacob Jarzen, Kevin Puskaric, Josh Geschwendt and Brandon Williams winning with a time of 1:32.18.
Rachel Wilson won the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:28.15 while Whitney Woodbridge was second with a 10:34.57 mark.
KJ Burkland led the women in the 200 yard freestyle with a clocked time of 1:57.02. The men, led by Colby Ward and Kevin Puskaric, gave MSU the sweep of the event. Ward was first with a time of 1:42.33 and Puskaric was second with a 1:43.59 mark.
Brooke Telander, Lauren Daugherty and Tori Merritt finished first, second and third, respectively, in the 50 yard freestyle. Telander led all swimmers with a time of 24.75. Daughterty finished in 24.76 while Merritt clocked in at 24.86.
Alex Pierce claimed the 200 yard IM crown with a time of 2:10.46. Jacob Jarzen, Nick Roberts and Mark Schramm swam one, two and three in the event for MSU. Jarzen clocked in at 1:53.26 while Roberts finished in 1:56.27 and Schramm in 1:57.11.
In the diving events, Jordan Jackson led all divers with a score of 321.00 on the one meter. Ashley Borgman was second (304.65) and Sarah Clay was third (300.60). Ivan Zalessov claimed first place with a score of 359.70 and Brian Akers was second with a 281.02 mark.
Becca Ebner paced the women in the 200 yard butterfly with a winning time of 2:03.59. Ricky Forrest, Michael Uggeri and Sean Costello gave MSU the sweep on the men's side. Forrest finished in 1:54.21 while Uggeri clocked in at 1:55.58 and Costello in 1:56.79.
Bryan Williams finished the 100 yard freestyle in 46.78 while Colby Ward was second in 48.37.
KJ Burkland won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.29. Brad Gillilan also won the 500 yard freestyle when he clocked in at 4:41.18. Nick Roberts finished second in the event with a 4:42.21 mark.
MSU's 200 yard freestyle relay team of Morgan Piasecki, Tori Merritt, Jenny Rusch and Brooke Telander won the event in 1:36.52. The men's relay team of Jacob Jarzen, Brandon Williams, Bryan Williams and Mark Schramm clocked in at 1:24.39 for the win.
The Spartans return to action when they travel to Atlanta, Ga., for the Georgia Tech Invitational Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 18 -20.
