Swimming and Diving Pick Up a Win and Loss at Ball State

MUNCIE, Ind. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team split the meet with a win and loss at Ball State on Saturday afternoon at Lewellen Aquatic Center. The men topped the Cardinals with a 167-121 score while the women fell to BSU, 182-108. The men picked up eight first-place finishes on the afternoon. Bryan Williams started them off strong in the 1,000-yard freestyle taking top honors in a time of 9:38.89. Williams also tallied another first-place finish toward the end of the meet, in the 100-yard butterfly clocking in at 49.61. In the 200 back, Mark Gammell, clocked in at 1:53.92 to finish first while Nick Roberts (1:55.58) and David Zoltowski (1:56.84) followed close behind in second and third, respectively. The Spartans went one, two in the 200 breaststroke with Hunter Bartlett finishing first with a time of 2:09.92 and older brother Cameron Bartlett just a second behind in second (2:10.22). Jake Austermann picked up a pair of first-place finishes in the 200 and 500 free. Austermann posted a time of 1:45.33 in the 200 free and 4:47.64 in the 500 free. Diver Brian Akers had the best performance of his season thus far, taking first place in both the one-meter and three-meter competitions. Akers tallied a 311.91 on the one-meter and 268.35 on the three-meter board. The Green and White closed out the meet with one final victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay as the team of Williams, Kyle Workman, Rob McGowan and Nick McGowan clocked in almost 10 seconds ahead of the competition with a 3:08.38. On the women's side, Jenny Rusch and Alexandra Pierce were the top performers of the afternoon. Rusch took first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.09. Pierce was the individual winner in the 200 IM (2:07.38) and took second in the 200 butterfly (2:05.59). MSU also won the 400-yard freestyle relay with Summer Strickler, Rusch, Laura Leslie and Morgan Piasecki hitting the wall in a time of 3:33.78.
The Spartans return to action when they travel to Delray Beach, Fla., for their yearly training trip Jan. 2-8, 2011.
