Freshman Swimmer Reaches Finals at the U.S. Open

East Lansing, Mich. - Select members of the MSU men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the 1997 United States Open in Indianapolis, Ind. from Dec. 4-6. The U.S. Open was the final U.S.-sanctioned swimming event of the year.

On the first day of competition, Michigan State freshman Mike Tingley competed in the finals of the 200-meter backstroke and finished 19th with a time of 2:08:19.

During the second day of competition, Tingley finished 25th out of 59 competitors in the preliminary event of the men's 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:00.36 and missed the finals in that event by just one place.

In the 200-meter freestyle preliminary, MSU freshman Mike Mulshine finished 36th out of 85 competitors with a time of 1:57.23. In the preliminary of the women's 100-meter backstroke MSU senior Jami Archambault finished 51st with a time of 1:09.45.

On the final day of competition MSU senior captain Anne Illgen finished 32nd out of 70 competitors in the preliminary event of the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:21.88 and sophomore Catrin Lenfers completed the preliminary 200-meter breaststroke 43rd out of 59 with a time of 2:44.27.

The Spartans will hit the pool next when MSU swimming travels to the Ft. Lauderdale Relays Dec. 20-21.
