Women's Swim Team Falls to Michigan in First Meet of The Year
EAST LANSING, Mich.- The Michigan State women's swim team battled the 11-time Big Ten champion Michigan Wolverines, but fell short in its efforts Saturday morning, 129-74. The Spartans were part of a big weekend at MSU. The meet was held outdoors at I.M. West in hopes that the frenzy surrounding East Lansing would rub off and take the team to victory. It was not to be as the Spartans fell to the Wolverines.
Despite the loss, MSU turned in some strong performances. Co-captain Anne Illgen won the 200 butterfly in 2:21.67. She had to hold off two strong Michigan swimmers, Kasey Harris (2:21.74) and Kerri Hale (2:24.98). Illgen was also a member of the 400 medley relay team with Jami Archambault, Catrin Lenfers, and Dianne Oliver. The relay team took second place with a time of 4:35.28.
For the University of Michigan, Shannon Shakespeare dominated the competition. Individually, she won the 200 freestyle, 2:09.64, and the 100 freestyle, 59.98. Shakespeare also teamed with Kasey Harris, Jen Crisman, and Lisa Butzlaff to win the 400 medley relay in 4:27.95.
The Michigan State University women's swimming and diving team will be in action again on November 8th when it hosts Ball State University at the Charles McCaffree indoor pool in the I.M. West building. The meet begins at 2:00 p.m.
