Spartan Swimmers Head To Phillips 66 Spring Nationals
March 15, 2000 EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State Spartans swimming and diving team will see several members off to Federal Way, Washington, March 28-April 1, for the Phillips 66 National Championships. The Phillips 66 Spring Nationals will be the last time before the 2000 Olympic Trials that most of the major U.S. stars will face each other. Three members of the men's swimming and diving team will be competing among America's top swimmers. Sophomore Aaron Mahaney (Easton, Pa.) will be competing in the 200-meter butterfly. Freshman Joe Brennan (Poway, Calif.) will swim in the 400-meter freestyle. Junior Tim Gendler (Ypsilanti, Mich.) will compete in the 200-meter backstroke. Three swimmers from the women's swim team will have their chance to qualify for the Olympic trials at the nationals. Junior Andrea Stewart (Trenton, Mich.) will compete in the 100-meter butterfly. Competing in the 50-meter freestyle is senior Dianne Oliver (Louisville, Ky.). Sophomore Ildiko Szekely (Budapest, Hungary) will swim in the 200-meter butterfly.
