Swimming and Diving Updates from the Desk of Matt Gianiodis

"A wise man speaks because he has something to say; a fool because he has to say something." -Plato
This past week, we have really been able to experience spring in East Lansing. The weather has been spectacular and all the signs of spring are here. Unfortunately, one annual sign of spring here at Michigan State is the rumor that the swimming and diving programs are in danger of being discontinued. As juicy as this rumor is, especially amongst the spectators at age groups meets, it is entirely untrue. In the past year, our program has been the recipient of new locker rooms and a new team room. We have also done a great job of fundraising, thanks exclusively to our alumni and supporters.
There are a lot of people who care deeply for this program and everyone in it and that includes administrators here at MSU. I would ask that if you hear of the rumor, please tell the person you heard it from to contact me and I will do my best to set them straight.
The Spartan swimmers and divers will be taking part in their spring community service projects in the next month. On Friday, April 20, we will participate in the Special Olympics. Then on Saturday, April 21, we will assist in the adopt-a-river project.
April 11 is the spring signing date, and we are hoping to announce a few more Spartan swimmers and divers to the class of 2011.
Finally, best of luck to the Spartan hockey program next week in the Frozen Four.
Until next time,
