April 5, 2007

Last week, I waxed eloquently of the many signs of spring on campus and today I write as it is snowing outside. How great it is to be in Michigan!

The Big Ten released its Academic All-Big Ten awards last week and Michigan State had 42 recipients. Of the 42 Spartan students honored, 22 of them are swimmers and divers. That is pretty good for us considering more than half our team are freshmen. Freshmen are ineligible from being named Academic All-Big Ten.

On Monday April 9, our department will be hosting the 10th Academic gala. This year's speaker is none other than Steve Smith. I know many of you have attended this banquet in the past decade. Each year it gets more and more grand. In fact, this year I am required to attend in a tuxedo. It is a highlight every year for our program because of the large number of team members who are honored for their work in the classroom.

Speaking of honors, a very special congratulations to Matt McNichols. Matt has been selected to represent Michigan State at the NCAA leadership conference in Orlando, Fla. Only one person represents each member institution, so this is quite an honor for our program and especially for Matt. I am very confident that he will represent Michigan State very well.

Next week is the signing date and we are looking forward to adding s few more Spartans for 2007-08.

We are also getting ready for the banquet on April 22. If you have any interest in attending, please contact us as soon as possible.

Until next time,
Matt G
