Swimming and Diving Updates from the Desk of Matt Gianiodis
May 10, 2007
I have included our schedule for next year. We begin the year by bringing back our traditional Green & White Meet. This year, we are looking for guest coaches in the Green & White Meet, and we may have a guest-coach race during the meet for points.
The one thing that stands out is the lack of home meets. We owe quite a few schools return trips, so we are going to be on the road quite a bit this year. It is a difficult schedule with many Top 25 teams, but one that we hope will challenge us and better prepare us for the Big Ten Championships. The women open on Oct. 20 at home against Illinois. The men begin at Iowa the following Friday. Below is the full schedule:
Fri, Oct 12- Green & White (m&w)- East Lansing, Mich.- 6 p.m.
I want to congratulate 2006 Heusner Award Winner Jack Beattie for being honored by the Southern Association of Orthodontists as the 2007 recipient of the Oren Oliver Distinguished Service Award, the highest recognition bestowed by that organization.
On June 24, we are going to host the annual Masters Swim Meet. The proceeds go to the John Munley Scholarship fund. This is quickly becoming a summer alumni meet, and we'd love to get all of our supporters to the outdoor pool.
I want to congratulate all of our graduates for 2007. We have some very impressive work that is going to be done by these great kids. I also want to congratulate Basak Oguz, who retired from swimming last year but stayed at MSU. She recently graduated in mechanical engineering. She won the most prestigious award in the department and is going to be working as a TA in the engineering graduate school here at MSU. This is a great accomplishment.
As we move into the summer, the hope is that our team will put in the necessary work to help us improve next year.
Until next time,
