Schedule Announced for 2018-19 Spartan Swimming and Diving
New ACC-Big Ten Challenge Debuts in November
East Lansing, Mich. -- - Michigan State swimming & diving head coach Matt Gianiodis has unveiled the competition schedule for the upcoming season, which is peppered with traditional rivalries, staunch competition, and a new All-Star event that will showcase some of the best student-athletes in the Big Ten Conference.
"We are very excited for the upcoming season, especially our home meets," explained Gianiodis. "We're really looking forward to being part of the new ACC/B1G challenge in November at Purdue, where the Conference will show off our tremendous talent against the best of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Ours is a very challenging schedule and we are hoping - as always -- that it will well prepare us to have a great showing at the B1G Championships in February."
The opening meet of the season takes place on Friday, Sept. 28, when the Spartans host Iowa in an 11 am meet.
On Oct. 12, the squads will split -- the women will race at Illinois (5 pm) while the men compete at UIC in a meet that starts at 4 pm. The Rutgers women come to East Lansing on Oct. 26 to race the Spartans at 5 pm.
To open November, both the men's and women's teams will face off against perennial Division III powerhouse Kenyon College at McCaffrey Pool. The Kenyon Ladies were the national runner-up a year ago, while the Lords were runners-up in both 2016 and 2017.
The women will race at Bowling Green on Friday, Nov. 9. The same weekend, the inaugural ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The short-course yards dual meet is slated for Nov. 10-11 at the Morgan J. Burke Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University. A similar format to the successful 2016 College Challenge (versus USA Swimming), a running score will be kept throughout the dual meet competition combining the points earned by both women and men. At least two males and two females from each Conference school will compete.
The Spartans will wrap collegiate competition for the first semester at the Northwestern Invitational Nov. 16-18.
When the schedule resumes in January, The Spartans will host three events in preparation for the Big Ten Championships. MSU welcomes Purdue on Jan. 4 and race at Oakland (Jan. 19). In February, the Spartans will host both Notre Dame (Feb. 2) and Michigan (Feb. 8).
The Women's Big Ten Championships begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20, and will be hosted by Indiana; a week later, the men begin competition at Iowa for the 2018 Men's Big Ten Championships.
The 2018 Swimming and Diving Championships will be held in Austin, Texas over consecutive weeks for the women (March 20-23) and men (March 27-30).
Outside of the intercollegiate meets, some of the highlights of the 2018-19 schedule include the annual Alumni meet on Saturday, Oct. 6 as part of homecoming festivities on campus, the annual December training trip to Delray Beach, Fla., and MSU's participation in USA Winter Nationals, which will be held in late November in Greensboro, North Carolina.
