Swimming and Diving Updates from the Desk of Matt Gianiodis
Sept. 20, 2006
Wow! What and exciting time to be on campus. The leaves are changing and we have a big football game on Saturday night. The swimming and diving program will be tailgating on the outdoor pool deck on Saturday starting at about 5:00 p.m. I invite all of our supporters to please drop by and say hello.
Also on Saturday, our team will be selling 50/50 tickets for the last time this year. Please, if you see any of our kids walking around the tailgate lots buy some tickets from them. This activity raises quite a bit of money for our program so please help us out if you can.
Last week, we had a great week of training. I have been really impressed by our freshman class and their ability to train, along with the rest of our team. We have been going exclusively long course so far, and the team has really been handling it well.
This past Friday, we had our annual team scavenger hunt. The team captained by junior Tony Grace won the game by more than 300 points. Clues were hidden in the four corners of campus and we had our traditional impossible clue tribute to former Spartan Peter Politi.
By the time you read this we will be within a week of the 2006 Alumni Swimming and Diving meet on Sept. 30. The meet will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by the football game at 12:00 p.m. A couple of helpful tips: The best place to park is on Munn Field. We will have the back gate open to the outdoor pool deck for you to enter the building that way. The warm-ups will be from 9-9:30 a.m. and we will begin the events promptly at 9:30 a.m. Diving will run concurrently. At 10:00 a.m., we will take a short break to give out the Heusner Award and then we'll resume. The post-meet tailgate will begin at 10:30 a.m. The meet's events will include three 1-meter dives, "straight-up" 50 freestyle, and for the 51st consecutive year, the plunge. We will also do all the traditional relays.
For those of you getting your Ralph Young Fund renewals, please renew. We had a great year last year and we'd love to follow that up with a bigger one.
Go State and Beat the Irish!
Until next time,
