Sept. 7, 2006

The campus looks great. The outdoor pool is clear and the weather is still warm.

Right off, I would like to say that this past Tuesday, we kicked off the season and we look to be in pretty good shape for the upcoming year. We are going to miss our seniors from last year, but the current Spartans did fairly well in their meets this summer and most of them trained well. The current version of the Spartans features 17 incoming women and 12 incoming men. It is a large and heralded class on which we hope to build the program.

On Sept. 9 our team will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets for the Downtown Coaches Club. This is the fourth year we have done this and it has helped us raise a lot of money. If you are going to the game look out for the swimmers and divers and please purchase a few tickets.

Also, on Sept. 9, we have the Golden Spike Reunion. This is a weekend put in motion by Shawn Elkins and Steve Ploussard. They have more than 20 men's swimmers and divers from the '70s and early '80s coming to East Lansing for two days of golf as well as the football game. Shawn and Steve have done a great job organizing the event and I look forward to seeing all of the alumni when I play golf with them on Friday. I will have a report on the reunion in my next blog.

Please do not forget that the 51st-annual alumni meet will take place on Saturday, September 30. It will begin at 9 a.m. and we will present our annual Heusner Service Award to Tosh Imai, Jack Beattie and Marc Stiner.

Until next time,
Matt Gianiodis
