EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team will kick off the 2013-14 season on Friday with the Green & White Meet at McCaffree Pool in IM West. Scheduled for Oct. 4 at 5 p.m., the meet will consist of 14 swimming events and two diving events.

“Beyond anything else, it’s a chance for kids to compete,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis, who begins his 10th season at the helm of the Spartans. “Some of them have taken such a long time off, it’s good to have a meet like this to shake some of the dust off in terms of competition. We want them to make it competitive and we like to see the teams compete against each other. There’s some things we want to accomplish from this meet. We’ll start sorting out events and travel squads.”

Next weekend, Michigan State will host the 58th annual alumni meet on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 9 a.m. The longest running consecutive event on homecoming outside of the football game, the meet will welcome eight decades of Spartans to celebrate with the team.

The women, who welcome seven newcomers to the squad, will open Big Ten competition on Friday, Oct. 18 as they travel to face Iowa and Northern Iowa. On the men’s side, the Spartans have eight freshmen joining the team that will begin their season by hosting a team dual against Grand Valley State on Friday, Nov. 8.
