Spartans Open Up 2017-18 Season In Iowa City
The swimming and diving team will take on Iowa and Northern Iowa on Thursday and Friday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming and diving team opens the 2017-18 season at the UI Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium in Iowa City on Thursday, Oct. 5 and Friday, Oct. 6.
On Thursday, both the men's and women's teams will compete against Iowa at 7 p.m. (CT). On Friday, the men will compete against Iowa again and the women's team will compete with Iowa and Northern Iowa at 10 a.m.
"We are looking forward to going to Iowa. They have a great facility and they run great meets." Michigan State head coach Matt Gianiodis said. "Marc (Long)'s teams are always well prepared, and we are really excited to kick the season off."
The Spartans return eight men who have landed themselves in MSU's all-time top 10 record books. One of them, sophomore Payton Woods, owns the school record for the 50 free with a time of 19.83. Woods also competed in the 2017 Phillips 66 National Championships.
The women also return eight swimmers who put themselves in MSU's all-time top 10 record books. Senior Racheal Bukowski holds the school record for the 50 free with a 22.50 and the 100 free with a 49.46.
With 15 seniors and 17 incoming freshmen, the Spartans will have all different levels of experience competing with the Hawkeyes and the Panthers.
"I'm very excited to see our seniors start their final season and all of our freshmen begin successful collegiate careers," Gianiodis said.
