Coach G's Blog: Getting Ready for Alumni Weekend
Oct. 5, 2012
We had a very exciting weekend at Michigan State and it began last Friday with our annual outdoor long course meet. All the credit for our meet goes to Kathleen Milloy and the event management staff- specifically Seth Kessler in the athletic department.
I had a chance to see an awful lot of alumni over the weekend at the meet and also on Saturday before the football game. It was especially fun catching up with the women in the class of 2005. It was a really nice tune-up for homecoming next weekend.
Speaking of homecoming, we will host our 57th Annual Alumni Meet at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13. The IM West building is now closed on football Saturdays, so entrance into the meet will be from the back gate to the outdoor pool deck. You will not be able to get into the IM West through the front doors, so you will need to go around to the back.
At the Alumni Meet, we will be presenting the Bill Heusner Service Award for the 11th time. After next weekend, there will be a total of41 recipients. The award has become a hallmark of our program and it continues to honor the name of Dr. Heusner who was such a great supporter of swimming and diving at MSU and within the Big Ten.
Last weekend also gave me the opportunity to meet Todd and Amanda Mercer for the first time. As many of you know, Amanda was part of a world record-setting relay that crossed the English Channel this summer. Her accomplishment was recognized by our athletic department at the football game on Saturday. It was so inspirational watching both Spartans and Buckeyes giving her a standing ovation when she was introduced on the field.
Please be sure to check out all of our social media pages for updates now that the season has begun. We try to update them daily so people can stay informed.
Look forward to homecoming week and don't forget to glow green!
Until next week,
