Four Swimmers Named to Big Ten All-Star Team
November 11, 1998 EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four Michigan State swimmers have been selected to the Big Ten All-Star Team which will compete against the U.S. Swimming National Team this Friday and Saturday in Evanston, Ill. Senior John Bruesch (Lombard, Ill.) and sophomore John Munley (Kalamazoo, Mich.) have been selected from the Spartan men's team, while junior Dianne Oliver (Louisville, Ky.) and sophomore Andrea Stewart (Trenton, Mich.) will represent the MSU women. "It's very exciting for these athletes," head coach Richard Bader said. "On the men's side we have two senior national qualifiers going, and John Munley is a senior national scorer who has one of the top 10 times in the country in the 200 freestyle this year. "For the women, we have both of our sprinters going and that will only help add to their experience. It will be an aggressive meet and the most important thing for the athletes will be the experience of being in a competitive environment with the national team." Assistant coaches Mary Ellen Wydan and Matt Gianiodis have been named to the Big Ten All-Stars' coaching staff, bringing the total number of Spartans involved this weekend to six. Bruesch will swim the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes. Munley is the most active of the four Spartans, scheduled to compete in the 200 freestyle, the 400 free relay, the 800 free relay and the 400 medley relay.
Oliver and Stewart will both compete in the 50 freestyle, while Stewart will also be part of the 800 free relay.
