Spartans Start Northwestern TYR Invitational Off Strong

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Spartans came out strong on the first day of the Northwestern TYR Invitational. The men are currently in first place with 292.5 points, just ahead of Northwestern with 276.5. The women are in second with 274 points, just behind Northwestern with 370.
“We’re off to a great start. Our men are doing great. Tal (Hanani) swam great in the IM,” head coach Matt Gianiodis said. “I’m really excited to see what we can do over the next few days.”
Big Ten Freshman of the Week Guy Moskovich won the 500 free with a personal and team best time of 4:24.98. With this time, Moskovich enters the Michigan State all-time top ten in the event.
Senior Alex Trompke finished first in the 50 backstroke with a personal-best time of 22.67. Tal Hanani swam a season and team best time of 1:47.67 in his first place finish in the 200 IM.
Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Racheal Bukowski swam a season-best time of 22.84 in her second-place finish in the 50 free. Junior Ana Sortland finished second in the 50 breaststroke, clocking in at 28.68.
In the 200 freestyle relay, Payton Woods, Nick Leshok, Josh Lantow and Gabe Whitaker grabbed second with a time of 1:21.24.
In the 400 medley relay, Cathryn Armstrong, Ana Sortland, Iana Wolff and Bukowski clocked in at 3:43.05, bringing home second place.
On the diving side, Morgan Wellenzohn placed third in the 3-meter with a score of 269.75.
The Spartans will pick up where they left off, and resume competition tomorrow, Nov. 18 at 9 a.m. CT in the Norris Aquatics Center.
