Michigan State Sends 10 Spartans To USA Winter Nationals

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State swimming and diving program will send 10 individuals to Columbus, Ohio to compete in USA Winter Nationals. The meet will be held from Nov. 29-Dec. 2 in the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

Nick Leshok, Phillip Meffert, Scott Piper, Michael Schwers and Payton Woods will be representing the Spartans on the men’s side. From the women’s team, Cathryn Armstrong, Racheal Bukowski, Ellie Roche, Ana Sortland and Erin Szara will be competing.

These athletes are coming off of impressive performances at the Northwestern TYR Invitational, where both the men and women finished in second.

Leshok placed third in the 100 IM, a team and season-best. Meffert’s time of 2:05.61 in the 200 breast and Piper’s time of 1:52.26 in the 200 IM were season-bests and both rank second on the team in the respective events.

Schwers was a part of the third-place 400 medley relay team with Woods. Woods also started the 200 medley relay team off strong, as they finished in second place.

Bukowski finished second in the 50 free with a season-best time of 22.84 and finished first in the 100 free, making that her fifth consecutive win in the event.


 

 

Sortland finished first in the 100 breast and second in the 50 breast with season-best and team-best times of 1:01.60 and 28.68, respectively. Her time of 1:01.60 in the 100 breast broke a varsity record. Szara placed third in the 50 breast, with a personal-best time of 28.75 for the freshman.

In the 200 breaststroke, Roche swam a 2:16.35, which happens to be a team and season-best. Armstrong was a member of two relays that came in second-place.
