EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State swimming team will send student-athletes to Knoxville, Tenn., for the three-day AT&T Winter National Championships against the top swimmers in the country. The meet, hosted by the University of Tennessee, will be held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on Thursday, Dec. 5 and continue through Saturday, Dec. 7. Prelims for each event are scheduled for 9 a.m. and finals slated for 5 p.m. Both times are eastern standard.
“I was a little gun-shy about taking the whole team because exams start on Monday and it just didn’t fit in for us,” said head coach Matt Gianiodis. “But the two of them have been able to handle themselves academically. Oguz has known about going to this meet. We’ve talked about it all the way back to October because he had such success at his Turkish Nationals. I think it will be good for him to get a chance to see what high-level swimming is like in this country. Summer went last year. She’s a senior and has herself in pretty good order academically. I really hope they find themselves a way to sneak themselves into the finals, which would be pretty great.”
The Spartans will face tough competition against some of the nation's top Division I schools including host Tennessee, California, Arizona State, and Big Ten rivals Michigan and Indiana. Also swimming at the meet will be athletes from the 2012 London Olympics including Nathan Adrian, Matt Grevers, Missy Franklin and Kathleen Ledecky.
Each session from the meet will also be streamed live on usaswimming.org/nationals. After each evening's finals at the meet, results will be available at the same site.
Over the winter break, MSU will take a group of Spartans down to Delray Beach, Fla., for a training trip before opening up the 2014 portion of the schedule at Purdue on Jan. 11 at 1 p.m.
