Dec. 14, 2006
We are in the midst of exam week, so many of you former swimmers and divers remember this week well. It was either a "validation" of the great semester (or depending on how far back you go, trimester), or it was the "opportunity" to make up for the lost study time you misplaced during the school year. Needless to say, we have our certain percentage of stressed out Spartans. Hopefully, we'll come out of this week in our traditional fashion of attaining a high team gpa.
This past weekend, we hosted Ball State in our annual December tilt. The men won handily to capture their first win of the year. Our women tied the meet, 150-150. The women's meet was another time again this season where I did not do a great job of putting together a solid lineup. We got caught perhaps overlooking the Cards, and I do give them a ton of credit for how they swam and how hard they competed. I have long respected coaches Bob Thomas and Laura Caudill. Their teams compete hard and they never quit.
This past week also marked the official move in date for our new locker rooms. Though they are not complete, they are livable, so we moved in officially on Friday (Dec. 8) The new space is highlighted by the big block "s" tiled into the floor of the locker room. We also have a new team lounge that opened up last week. In fact, our parents put together a reception following the Ball State meet in the new space. The old team room is going to become my office, and we will have the rest of the coaching staff spread out in the old space.
In this holiday time, please take time to enjoy the season and especially enjoy the people with whom you get to share it. This Friday, we will take part for the second year in a row, helping the Salvation Army at the toy distribution center. This is a community service project that was begun last year by Matt Wisniewski and Erika Templeton. We have adopted it as our own project. It has, and will become a holiday staple for our team. Please look on our website for an update on it.
Next week in this space, I will announce the 2007 Heusner Award winners. I also will update you all on our academic achievement in the Fall semester. I also will hand out my holiday "gifts" for the semester.
Until next time,
