June 2, 1997 Five Runners to Represent MSU at NCAA ChampionshipsEAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State University will be represented by five runners at the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week in Bloomington, Indiana. The national championships will be held at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex and will run from Wednesday, June 4 to Saturday, June 7. Junior Sevatheda Fynes, the 1997 NCAA indoor champion in the 55 meters, leads the Spartan contingent. Fynes, a native of Cooper's Town, Bahamas, will be joined by teammates Chandra Burns (Detroit) and Stephanie Dueringer (Champaign, Ill.), while the men's team will be represented by Brad Fields (Kentwood) and Kyle Baker (Anderson, Ind.). Fynes, who will compete in the 100 and 200 meters, is looking to become the first Spartan female to win multiple national titles. Fynes captured Big Ten titles in both events at the recent Big Ten Outdoor Championships and has the top times (11.00 - 100 / 22.51 - 200) in each event among the entered runners. Fynes will be joined in the 200 meters by senior Chandra Burns. Burns' time of 22.86 is fourth best among the enteries in the 200. She will also compete in the 400 meters, the event in which she finished eighth and earned All-America honors in at last season's NCAA Championships. Senior Stephanie Dueringer will compete in the 10,000 meters in her second-straight NCAA Outdoor Championships. Last season, she finished 12th with a time of 34:47.81. Dueringer heads into this season's competition with the fifth-fastest time with a clocking of 34:29.72. On the men's side, senior Brad Fields will close out his MSU career with an appearance in the 200 meters. Fields finished third in the 200 at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 20.75. Sophomore Kyle Baker will compete in the 5,000 meters, the event he captured at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships with a time of 14:06.24. Baker finished fifth in the 3,000 meters at the 1997 NCAA Indoor Championships.
