THE OPENER: The 1998 Michigan State women's track and field campaign kicks off with the Michigan State Invitational, held Jan. 17 at Jenison Field House. The lineup card features a pair of in-state rivals - Western Michigan and Ferris State. Field events will start at 10:30 a.m., with the running events to begin at noon.
TIME TO RELOAD: After a solid 1997 season, the Spartans must now look to overcome the loss of three of their most prolific runners in MSU history. Distance runner Stephanie Dueringer, sprinter Chandra Burns and NCAA Champion sprinter Sevatheda Fynes have moved on, however a solid nucleus will be back to handle the load. A veteran squad, including senior Lawanda Byrd, junior Lisa Holmes and sophomore Leah Nilsson.
MSU vs. THE BRONCOS: The Spartans and Broncos crossed paths twice during the 1997 indoor season, with Michigan State coming out on top during the only affair in which team scores were kept, the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships. Fynes, Dueringer and the 1600-meter relay squads each picked up race victories during the six-team contest.
