Spartans Cap Friday action at the Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The Michigan State track and field team completed their first day of competition at the Indiana Invitational with a number of Spartans placing within the top three of their prospective events.
Strong performances came from Melanie Brender who placed first in the 3000m with a time of 9:55.90, Alicia Evans who won the 200 meter dash in 24.56, and freshman Brittany Lewis who placed first in the 600m (1:29.96).
Lewis, a native of Lambton Shores, Ontario, now holds the Canadian Junior Women's record in the 600m. In addition, today's victory marks the third individual victory in the first three meets of her collegiate career.
In field events, Antonio James grabbed the victory in the men's shot put with an effort of 58-02 (17.73m) while Catherine Daniels earned first in the weight throw (59-09 ½ / 18.22) for the women.
Men's distance saw second-place finishes in the 3000m from redshirt freshman David Madrigal (8:19:10) and in the mile from Kevin Yarnell (4:13.02).
Third-place finishes came from DeVantré Whitelow in the 200m (21:80), mid-distance runner Alysson Bodenbach in the 600m (1:31:21), and TeJuanna Williams clocking 24.89 in the women's 200m.
Whitelow and Williams will also compete tomorrow in the 60m dash after qualifying times in today's events.

Leslie Aririguzo - 8.60 in the Women's 60m Hurdles
Keenan Michael - 8.28 in the Men's 60m Hurdles
Action begins tomorrow morning at 10:20 a.m. with the weight throw.
