Michigan State's Byrd Wins Three Events in Women's Track

Pole Vault Record Falls Again

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior Lawanda Byrd won three events while freshman Katie Meyer broke her own school record in the pole vault in a dual meet with Central Michigan in Jenison Field House on Saturday afternoon. Central Michigan was victorious, 81-77.

Byrd won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.14 seconds then preceded to take the 55-meter dash in a season-high time of 7.29 and the 200-meter dash in 25.72, also a season high. In a jump-off for first place in the pole vault, Meyer broke the school record with a leap of 9-4 1/4 inches (old record 9-2 1/4). Classmate Jeannette Martus finished second at 8-10 1/4.

In the mile, MSU scored a 1-2 finish with junior Karyn Duba winning in a season-best 5:04.92. Sophomore Leah Nilsson picked up second in 5:08.47. Sophomore Jen Denkins took home the victory in the 3,000m (10:26.30) with Christie Achenbach, also a sophomore, right behind.

Senior Shermaine McKenzie scored three points for the Spartans with a season-best run of 57.69 in the 400m for second place while senior Becky Caldwell placed second in the 800m (2:19.99) and junior Joann Brown took third in the shot put (39-8).

MSU was victorious in both relays, winning the 4 x 400m in 4:07.30 and the distance medley relay in 12:33.64.
