EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State sophomore Christie Achenbach seized the women's 3,000-meter event Friday night at the Ball State Open, held in Muncie, Ind.

Achenbach, a native of Unionville, blew away the 19-runner field, as she broke the tape in 10:25.68, nearly ten seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Achenbach's victory marked the lone Spartan victory in the ten-team meet.

Even with many of MSU's top runners at the Cannon Classic in Indianapolis, the Spartans made their presence felt in the 10-team meet, especially in the long-distance events.

Backing Achenbach's 3k victory was the strong running of senior Becky Caldwell, who grabbed second place in the mile (5:09.70). She was joined in the top ten of the 24-runner race by fellow Spartans Sarah Parbel (5:15.60) and Achenbach (5:21.50), who finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

A trio of Spartans also finished in the top ten of the 800, as sophomore Lindsay Towne (2:18.95) and junior Carmen Suchomski (2:20.02) finished back-to-back in second and third, respectively. Teammate Nicole McMillan took seventh as she crossed the finish line in 2:23.54.

Another solid performance came from Katie Meyer, the current MSU pole vault record holder, as she finished third in that event with a mark of 9-2
