Palo Alto, Calif. - Michigan State senior Matt Bartlebaugh finished his first 10,000-meter run of the outdoor season in 29:57.49 at the Stanford Invitational on Friday evening. The senior fell 27 seconds short of the regional-qualifying time (29:30.00).

Junior Stephan Shay finished the same race in 31:06.97, despite cramping with 2,000 meters left before the finish line.

"Last year, a 30 minute race was a tough race for Matt (Bartlebaugh) and now he is under 30 minutes, which makes him very competitive," head coach Walt Drenth said. "Running under 30 minutes is a great athletic accomplishment in the 10,000-meter race and he has made a lot of progress from last season to this season."

The Spartans will hit the track again as they travel to Williamsburg, Va., April 6-7 for the Colonial Relays. The team returns home on April 14 for the Spartan Invitational, the only home meet for the Green and White this year.
