Track & Field Finishes Strong at Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fighting adverse weather in its lone home meet of the season, the Michigan State track & field team concluded action at the Spartan Invitational on Saturday, April 3. The Spartans saw 17 first-place finishes throughout the day in various events. Ashley Lawrence led the team in the throws with a first-place finish in both the shot put (14.27m) and the discus throw (46.87m). Yury Ratomski led the men on the track with a pair of first-place finishes in the 400m dash and both the the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams.
Erica Mann led all runners in the 100m dash with a time of 11.73. Her fellow 4x100m relay mate Charelise Davis recorded a personal-best time of 23.20 to win the 200m dash. Mann's 4x400m teammate Alysson Bodenbach placed first in the 400m with a 55.79 mark.
The 4x100m relay of Mann, Amelia Bannister, Davis and Coryn Marzejon placed first with a time of 45.72. Bannister, Bodenbach, Mann and Marzejon comprise the 4x400m relay team who finished first with a time of 3:57.40.
Placing first in the women's high jump was Becca Buchholtz with a distance of 1.76m. Ashley Smith was the top female pole vaulter with a height of 3.81m. Katie Guikema took first-place honors in the long jump with a distance of 5.58m. Finishing first in the hammer throw with a distance of 50.25m was Beth Rohl.
Ratomski partnered with Brandon VanDriel, Durant Crum and Shane Wells to win the 4x100m relay with a 41.06 mark. Stephen Humes, Ratomski, Jake Hamilton and Keenan Michael posted a time of 3:23.10 to win the 4x400m relay.
Michael posted a time of 14.50 in the 110m hurdles to finish first overall.
The Spartans will return to action next weekend (April 9-10) when they travel to Tempe, Ariz. for the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State.
