Track & Field Kicks Off Weekend At EMU Twilight

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State track and field team opened action at the EMU Twilight in Ypsilanti, Mich., on a stormy Friday afternoon (April 22). Placing first and second in the men's hammer throw was junior Jay Gillespie and sophomore Lonnie Pugh, respectively. Gillespie finished with a 58.14m mark and Pugh with a distance of 56.60m.

The Spartans had three women place in the top-10 in the 1,500m run. Leading the way was sophomore Kristen Smith who finished second with a time of 4:32.05. Junior Liz Watson followed in third (4:33.13) with sophomore Rachel McFarlane rounding out MSU in sixth (4:35.61).

Competing unattached in the 1,500m run was freshmen Sara Kroll and Leah O'Connor. Kroll won the event when she crossed in 4:28.25. O'Connor finished fifth as she clocked in at 4:34.65.

The men also had two unattached runners finish in the top-5 of the 1,500m run. Freshman Sherod Hardt placed second with a time of 3:56.02 while classmate Alex Wilson was fifth (3:58.75).

Senior Thereseann Huprikar ran in the seeded 5,000m run and placed ninth overall, crossing in 17:50.51.

Senior Ashley Lawrence placed second in the shot put with a recorded distance of 13.92m. Freshman Kelsey Prena followed Lawrence as she recorded a distance of 12.59 for eighth place.

Lawrence also placed seventh in the hammer throw as she posted a toss of 46.46m. Junior Catherine Daniels joined Lawrence in 10th with a distance of 45.16m.



Zack Hill was the top freshman in the shot put as he was second with a toss of 16.06m. Junior Aaron Ide also finished in the top-5 as he was fourth with a toss of 15.64m.

MSU continues action at the EMU Twilight on Saturday, April 23 while also opening action at the Jesse Owens Classic in Columbus, Ohio tomorrow.
