April 27, 2012

DES MOINES, IOWA - Junior Kurt Schneider was the lone Spartan competing at the Drake Relays this past Wednesday and Thursday, placing third in the Men’s Decathlon.

He snagged victories in two events – the long jump and high jump – and placed as high as fourth in two other events for a grand total of 7269 points, a new personal-best in multi-event competition.   After leading the entire field after day one, Schneider was ultimately edged by Daniel Gooris of Northern Iowa who placed first with 7624 points and Aaron Young of Wichita State who amassed 7324 by the end of day two.

Schneider, who earned PR’s in the 100-meter dash (11.05 seconds), Discus Throw (39.38 meters), and the Javelin (46.80 meters), also had the opportunity to compete against Bryan Clay, a 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist in the decathlon who was using the Drake Relays as tune up for the Summer Olympic Games in London.   Clay participated in eight of the ten events.
