Spartans Complete Day One At Len Paddock Invite
May 4, 2007
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - At day one of the two-day Len Paddock Invitational, freshman Scott Beals posted the highest MSU finish with a 60.38 meter (198-1) throw in the javelin for a first-place performance on Friday afternoon.
"We went to this meet to see our athletes improve one more meet before the Big Ten Championships next week," director of cross country and track and field Walt Drenth said. "That's what happened to today and I couldn't be happier."
Beals missed an NCAA-regional qualifying distance, but exceeded his former personal-best throw by 5.55 meters (18-2 1/2) in his first top performance of his Spartan career.
"This was a big improvement for Scott," Drenth said. "He made great progress at this meet and his mark should hold up and score some points at the conference meet."
Katie Shaw recorded a third-place finish in the pole vault. The freshman missed the NCAA-regional mark by a few inches, but cleared 3.65 meters (11-11 3/4) for third place.
"Katie missed the qualifying mark, but it is good to have her back on the runway and able to clear the bar," Drenth said.
Meagan Halliwill also threw a personal-best mark in the hammer throw with a toss of 51.85 meters (170-1). The junior thrower finished in second place.
The Spartans return to action tomorrow for day two of the competition.
