Spartan Throwers Compete At Toledo Invitational
Michigan State post multiple season-best performances in throws events.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State track & field team sent throwers to the Toledo Invitational on Friday where they posted personal and season-best performances against the competition. Held in Toledo, Ohio, the throwers competed in the discus throw and shot put.
“They are doing some really good things in their throws right now,” said assistant coach John Newell. “The meet was really good for us. They are doing the right things leading into Big Tens. I’m looking forward to where we are going to be at next week and expecting some big things from the group.”
Redshirt senior Kelsey Prena had a successful outing, posting season-best performances in both the shot put and discus throw. She recorded a season-best mark of 12.99m/ 42-7½ in the shot put to place seventh overall. Following up with another season-best throw in the discus, Prena hit a mark of 44.43m/ 145-9.
On the men’s side, redshirt sophomore Antonio James recorded a runner-up finish in the shot put with a mark of 17.19m/ 56-4¾. Also posting a top-five finish, redshirt freshman Jake Bennett threw a personal record mark of 15.69m/ 51-5¾ to place fourth overall.
James also placed second overall in the men’s discus throw, hitting a mark of 56.53m /185-5. Redshirt freshman Connor Kostrzewa recorded a 44.93m/ 147-5 to finish in sixth-place overall.
The Spartans will be back in action as they take on conference rivals at the 2013 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships on May 10-12 in Columbus, Ohio.
