WATCH: Track & Field Preview
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State will start the indoor portion of the 2013 track & field season this upcoming weekend as it travels to Allendale, Mich., for the GVSU Bob Eubanks Open at the Kelly Family Sports Center. Hosted by Grand Valley State University, the event begins on Friday (Jan. 11). The men's heptathlon and women's pentathlon will begin at 10 a.m. while the running and field events will begin at 2 p.m. Multi-events will finish on Saturday (Jan. 12) morning at 10 a.m.
The men will be led this season by redshirt senior Lonnie Pugh and redshirt junior Zack Hill. Pugh had a school-record weight throw of 21.40m (70-02 ½) at the 2012 Alex Wilson Invitational and placed sixth at the NCAA Indoor Championships. In 2012, Pugh was a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association First-Team All-American in the indoor and Second-Team All-American in the outdoor track seasons, as well as a 2012 NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Round Qualifier.
Hill broke the Michigan State indoor record in the shot put with a sixth place finish at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships and won the bronze in the shot put at the 2012 Big Ten Indoor Championships. In 2011, Hill was a NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Round Qualifier and a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Second-Team All-American in indoor and outdoor track.
On the women's side, MSU will be led by redshirt senior Beth Rohl and sophomore Tori Franklin. Rohl will return to continue her reign on the throwing front as she owns the school record in the weight throw with an effort of 20.99m (68-10 ½), a feat she accomplished at the 2012 Alex Wilson Invitational. She was a fifth place finisher at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships, in addition to being named the 2011 Big Ten Field Athlete of the Year and a U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Indoor First-Team All-American.
Franklin took third place in the triple jump at the 2012 NCAA Indoor Championships and earned a silver medal at the Big Ten Indoor Championships as a freshman. She is Michigan State's indoor school record holder in the event at 13.34m (43-9 ¼), breaking her own record twice throughout the course of the season. Franklin was also a two-time Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week in 2012.
Next up, the Spartans will travel to South Bend, Ind., for the Notre Dame Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 10 a.m.
