Track & Field Opens Season with Kentucky Invite for Second Consecutive Year
Jan. 13, 2011
EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State track & field team will open up its 2011 indoor season this weekend when it travels to the Kentucky Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, in Lexington, Ky. Competition will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
The men will be led this coming season by throwers Lonnie Pugh and Brad Wentzel. Pugh was a 2009 Big Ten Champion in the discus outdoors and currently holds the school record in the discus. Wentzel is currently tops on the schools list in the weight throw, ranking first in the hammer throw outdoors, too.
Patrick Grosskopf will pace the distance runners after setting the 10,000-meter record outdoors last year. Josh McAlary returns this season after qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championships last year in the 1,500m run as the top freshman.
Becca Buchholtz will lead the women as the reigning Big Ten Outdoor Champion in the high jump. After a cross country season which saw her earn Great Lakes Region Athlete of the Year honors for the second straight year, Emily MacLeod will lead the distance squad this coming season as she looks to continue an already impressive career.
Erica Mann will lead the women sprinters in 2011. At the Green and White Intrasquad meet in December, Mann posted a time of 7.72 seconds in the 60m dash.
The Spartans will be back in action next weekend for the Notre Dame Invite on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23.
